Iconic Wednesdays: Kelis

Good morning from the mothership!!! After long debate over the "shaved side do" that Rhianna,Cassie, and LaLa (just to name a few) are now rockin. I thought it would be great to start the first iconic Wednesday with the originator of that style. Kelis has been an innovator since she first stepped on the scene in 1999 with her big pink and white hair screaming "I Hate You So Much Right Now!!!" An anthem for every girl or woman who ever had boyfriend problems. Never really getting the recognition she deserved musically, she took her sound over seas only to soar as an artist. The Cut: For those that are too young to remember Salt and Pepper from the 80's and early 90's (I have added a video to jog your memory.) In 2005 Kelis paid homage to the asymmetrical style that Salt and Pepper rocked in the early 80's and gave you the "Fever" as my girl L.D. calls it. After Kelis professed she was "Bossy" in her 2005 video, I do remember a wide range of women rushing to their hair stylist to shave one side of their lustrous locs. The energy of her funk even forced me ask my boyfriend at the time to shave my head one night before went to a party. THE KICKER: But what boggles my mind, a large amount of you really believe Rhianna came up with it on her own. How could she? That is not to say Rhianna is not a stylish person because her style has definitely grown from bad to good in the past years. She takes a lot of her style from past icons to create something that works for her, which is cool too. I just don't think she could have come up with on her own. Kelis was the the first black chic to mix-up a punk style and make it funky, the first black chic that stepped outside the norm. She gave her natural style and as the media does, they rocked wit it until someone new came along. All I am asking is give credit when credit is due
