Tuesday night at Twin Jazz Lounge on U st was a night filled with the essence of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Along with the elegance of the Harlem Renaissance period. I was late so only caught the second half but what a second half it was. As I sat waiting in anticipation for Lady D to perform, eager to hear what her voice was like I thought back to what U st was like during the time of what I like to call "Black Elegance." As she began to sing I sat in awe of this woman who sang from the depths of her soul with passion in her voice. I couldn't help but think to myself why I had never heard name before. Denine Wilson a.ka. Lady D drives from Baltimore bringing with her a small chunk of what Baltimore art and music scene has to offer. This Neo-Soul artist is a breath of fresh air in the time of ciaos, with Maxwell back with a new album and two more on the way it makes me think back to why we loved neo-soul so much. Lady D's next performance will be at Blues Alley in Georgetown in the next couple of weeks and I will be sure to keep you posted.
